English

In September, Goal will be introducing its new interactive English assessments that cover all National Curriculum levels up to level 7. The higher levels are particularly useful for identifying pupils' strengths and weaknesses around the C/D boundary.

The assessments cover the skill areas of the English Curriculum and they include six questions on the following topics:

Word Recognition

Word Structure

Spelling

Understanding and Interpreting Text

Engage and Respond to Text

Create and Shape Text

Text Structure

Sentence Structure

Punctuation

Presentation

We provide reports that identify pupils’ strengths and weaknesses in the skills area of the national curriculum enabling teachers to focus on the creative side of the English curriculum. Individual reports provide 'can do' and 'target' statements.

It has been shown that our assessments engage pupils, support the learning process and provide comprehensive monitoring of pupils’ progress.

English assessments are available to help teachers:

  • monitor progress throughout the year
  • identify prior learning
  • check understanding
  • establish a baseline for target setting

In addition, marking is done automatically with the results presented in easy to read reports available in a matter of minutes.

There are two types of English assessment: National Curriculum progress assessments (NCPAs) and Focus assessments.

NCPAs allow teachers to assess their pupils against National Curriculum levels at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3. They have the optional facility of screening questions to determine the level of assessment for each individual pupil. Alternatively, fixed level assessments can be selected instead.

The scheme of work assessments check pupil understanding of specific topics such as punctuation at Key Stages 1 and 2 and text at Key Stage 3.  There are end of term assessments in Key Stages 1 and 2 and key objective assessments in Key Stage 3.

After an assessment is automatically marked, reports can be viewed and printed off for individual pupils and whole classes, reducing teacher workload and enabling full monitoring of pupils’ progress.
