SEAL Measure from EDI
SEAL relates to Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning. EDI has been working with Professor Katherine Weare and Doctor Robin Banerjee to produce the new EDI SEAL measure, a new online measure which allows teachers to measure pupils' SEAL domains.
The EDI SEAL measure consists of 56 items that cover the five SEAL domains of:
- Self-awareness
- Managing feelings
- Motivation
- Empathy
- Social skills
A further domain of awareness of social and emotional difficulties has also been included. Pupils respond to each item selecting either 'not all true', 'a bit true', 'quite true' or 'very true'.
How SEAL works
The measure is taken online, typically taking less than 30 minutes to complete. Results are provided instantly. A class report is available that gives the percentage scores for each SEAL domain and class average. Individual pupil reports give the pupil's percentage scores and a brief explanatory statement for each domain. Reports can be printed out / or saved electronically.

Pupil Attitude and Classroom Climate Measures
Goal has worked with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) to develop a new set of attitude and climate measures. Professors David Reynolds, Daniel Muijs and Charles Teddlie, experts in this field, have been involved with the development of the measures.
The attitude measures give an insight into how pupils view themselves while the climate measures indicate how pupils view their school. Both measures enable teachers to take note of ‘pupils’ voice’ and address the ‘personalised learning’ and ‘every child matters’ agendas. Pupils complete an online multiple-choice audit/questionnaire choosing one of; strongly agree; agree; disagree; or strongly disagree, in response to a statement. Both measures can be completed easily in a single lesson.
When the audit/questionnaire is sent for marking, a comprehensive set of reports are available. A class report is provided that summarises the responses for each area or construct in the audit/questionnaire. There are two pupil reports, one for the teacher/tutor and a softer version for the pupil. The pupil reports have brief statements commenting on the pupil’s responses. The pupil reports provide a focus for discussions with individual pupils and parents, as well as bringing to the teacher’s and the school’s attention issues that may need addressing. The reports are clear and attractive in appearance.
